Message from our Superior General

Here is a message from the Superior General of the Missionary Society of St Paul. In his message, Fr Mark Grima encourages us to continue striving in this new vision set for the Oratory, in making it a space of evagelization where we ‘witness to contemporary society once again that yes, Jesus is still relevant, central and necessary’. Fr Mark Grima was elected to the role of Superior General in the MSSP’s General Chapter last June. The MSSP has been taking care of the Oratory since 1927 when our Founder Joseph de Piro took it under the Society’s care. Below is the exhortation which Fr Mark Grima has shared with us who are in some way or another involved in the Oratory’s mission.

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Heb 4:12

This is an extremely challenging text which leaves no room for mediocrity and alienation, making it quite clear that the Word of God, who is Jesus Christ, is very much alive and present today and here. The power of the Son of God is actively stirring our spirit in ways and forms we least expect and it takes his own Spirit for us to start to understand this mysterious presence which in never hindered by time, space and human resistance. Yet, in his mysterious wisdom God approves human cooperation and in his love many a times wait and suffers our reluctance and biases.

It is in this arena of the divine and the human that we children of God dare to venture and humbly give God a helping hand. As Missionary Society of Saint Paul, our main call is evangelization, acting as God’s voice to the world. Like a catalyst we are called to bring in the new creation marked by God and not by us. This is God’s work, God’s creation and God’s love. And for so many decades, we at the Oratory, have tried to make possible this space, for us humans, to be invaded by God making in us a difference that marks our lives and of those around us.

This place is a sacred space of encounter where people come with their stories and let their lives be transformed, challenged, recreated and empowered by the One and only One who has the power to do so. We do hope that moving with the needs of the modern world we MSSP religious and lay would be able to provide that much needed environment where we can bring together our scattered lives and unfocused desires. Through worship, learning, sharing and mission we hope to witness to the contemporary society once again that yes, Jesus is still relevant, central and necessary.

I wish to all those who give so much in the keeping of this sacred space – love and wisdom to be true shepherds. And I hope that those who are searching for the true meaning of life will find this environment a door into the greater mysteries of God’s love.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit…The God of peace be with all of you. Amen.”  Rom 15:13,33
